You saw a Reel with a recipe, a workout cue, or a sales tip worth keeping, and now you want the words. That’s where Instagram stops helping. There’s no transcript panel, no “copy text” option and no export. If you’re wondering how to get the transcript of an Instagram Reel, you need to pull the text out yourself.
The fastest way is to paste the Reel’s link into an Instagram Reel to text converter. You get the spoken words back as text you can copy, download, search or translate. The rest of this guide covers why Instagram doesn’t offer this, how to copy the right link on each device, and what to expect.
The short version
To turn an Instagram Reel into text:
- Open the Reel and tap the Share icon (the paper plane), then Copy link. On a computer, use the … menu and choose Copy link.
- Paste the link into the Instagram video to text converter.
- Copy the transcript, or download it as TXT or PDF.
You don’t need to download the Reel, install an app, or have captions turned on.
Why Instagram has no transcript button
Instagram can show auto-generated captions on some Reels. When they’re on, the words appear over the video as it plays. That helps if you’re watching with the sound off, but it doesn’t help if you want the text.
- Captions aren’t on every Reel. Whether you see them depends on the creator’s settings, the language and your own caption settings.
- You can’t select or copy them. The words flash on screen a phrase at a time and disappear.
- There’s no export. Instagram has no download, transcript view or “save as text” option for Reels.
So even when a Reel has captions, getting the full text means rewatching it and typing along. A transcription tool does that part for you.
How to copy a Reel link
The link is the only thing you need, and where you find it depends on your device.
On iPhone or Android (Instagram app):
- Open the Reel.
- Tap the paper plane icon on the right side of the screen.
- Tap Copy link in the share options.
On a computer (instagram.com):
- Open the Reel.
- Click the … (more) menu and choose Copy link. Or just copy the URL from your browser’s address bar.
A Reel link looks like instagram.com/reel/…. Regular video posts (instagram.com/p/…) and IGTV links (instagram.com/tv/…) work the same way.
How to get the transcript of an Instagram Reel, step by step
- Paste the link. Open the tool to transcribe Instagram videos and Reels and paste the link you copied.
- Wait a moment. A short Reel usually takes just a few seconds. The Reel’s audio is transcribed with AI, so it works whether or not the Reel had captions. Your first transcript is free, with no signup.
- Use the text. The transcript appears on the page. From there you can:
- Copy it in one click.
- Download it as TXT or PDF.
- Search the transcript to jump to a specific word or phrase.
- Summarize it with AI, or ask questions about it with Ask AI.
- Translate it into 40 languages.
- Repurpose it into a blog post, LinkedIn post, X thread, newsletter, YouTube description or a new Instagram caption.
Each AI action, such as a summary, translation or repurpose, uses 1 credit.
Example output
Here’s roughly what a transcript of a short cooking Reel looks like. This is an illustrative example, not a real Reel:
Stop throwing out your stale bread. Here’s what I do instead. Tear it into chunks, about the size of a walnut. Toss it with olive oil, a pinch of salt and some garlic powder. Spread it out on a tray so the pieces aren’t touching. Bake at 375 for about twelve minutes, shaking the tray halfway. That’s it. Croutons that are better than anything from a bag.
Short Reels come back as plain text like this, ready to paste into a notes app or a recipe card. Videos over 2 minutes come back with timestamps.
What won’t work
A few honest limits:
- Private accounts. Only Reels and posts from public accounts can be transcribed. If the account is private, the link won’t work.
- Stories and DMs. These can’t be fetched from a link. If you have the video file, for example a Story you saved from your own account, you can upload the file instead. File uploads are on the Plus and Pro plans.
- Longer videos need a free account. Videos over 2 minutes need a free sign-in. They’re transcribed with AI, up to 2 hours long, at 1 credit per 10 minutes.
Common questions
Is it free to get a transcript of an Instagram Reel?
Yes. Your first transcript is free with no signup, and a free account gives you 3 transcripts a month. Instagram is included on every plan, including Free. A typical Reel uses 1 credit. If you need more, see the credits page.
Does it work if the Reel has no captions?
Yes. The tool transcribes the Reel’s audio, so it doesn’t matter whether the creator turned captions on. If a Reel has no speech at all, such as a clip set to music with text overlays, there are no spoken words to transcribe. For text that’s burned into the video, see how to copy text from an Instagram video.
What about Reels with background music?
Speech over light background music usually transcribes well. Loud music, several people talking at once, or song lyrics mixed with talking can make some lines less accurate. Give the text a quick read before you publish it anywhere.
Can I transcribe a Reel in another language, or translate it?
Yes. The transcript comes back in the language that was spoken, and you can then translate it into any of 40 languages from the same page.
Can I get the transcript of a private Reel?
No. Private accounts and private posts can’t be accessed from a link, so they can’t be transcribed. If the video is yours, save it to your device and upload the file instead (Plus and Pro).
How long can the Reel be?
Most Reels are under 2 minutes, and those work with no sign-in for your first transcript. Videos over 2 minutes need a free sign-in and can be up to 2 hours long, at 1 credit per 10 minutes.
Can I get subtitles or an SRT file from a Reel?
Not reliably from a short Reel. Reels up to 2 minutes come back as text without per-line timing, so an SRT or VTT file won’t line up with the video. Videos over 2 minutes are transcribed with real timing and can be downloaded as SRT or VTT. For timed captions on your own Reel, upload the video file to the subtitle generator (Plus and Pro).
Get the words out of any Reel
Instagram is built for watching Reels, not for keeping what’s said in them. Copy the link, paste it into the Instagram Reel to text converter, and you’ll have clean text in seconds, ready to copy, translate or reuse.
